Norman Hyams’ interest in boxing stretches quite far back and is deeply rooted. As a young boy, his father would take him to watch fights broadcast live from the USA in Leicester Square; this would mean he would be watching fights well into the early hours. For Norman, it became not the fighters but those who watched the fight and the atmosphere they conjured that were of primary interest. The anti-heroes. He has captured this fantastically here, cropping out the knockout blow.

Until he began painting some twenty years ago, Norman was in the boxing industry too. As a ticket tout, he brokered tickets on a large scale for those of some importance who wanted to attend matches: celebrities, managers, gangsters etc. Norman professes, “I was a black-market ticket tout”. As somewhat of an outsider in that capacity if not in others, it seems only apt that Norman picked up a brush.
